Chapter Eleven

“Is he still alive?” I asked as Feliu drew another vial of blood from me. My eyes were covered in a damp cloth, and the burn had subsided. But my body… I felt the change in me in every movement, every heartbeat. Every breath.

“Yes,” Feliu answered immediately. “We’ve got him isolated as well. We’re pumping him full of a surge that will boost his immune response and help his body fight this until we know what it is. He’s in a medically induced coma until we know the severity of what’s inside him.”

I sucked in a shaky breath. “He’ll survive.”

I had to believe that. There was no other option.

If Armise had lived and Ahriman had died within seconds then I had hope he would pull through this. He and I would take off as soon as we figured out what Ahriman had done to us. Ahriman hadn’t been able to stop us before and he wouldn’t now. Our path had been set before today, but now there was no wavering from it. No more bodily harm. No last assignments. No loyalty owed to anyone else.

We deserved to find peace.

Feliu cleared his throat. “You seem sure of that.”

I fought back the bile building in my throat and willed myself to believe there was hope. “I am.”

I peeled the wet bandages off my eyes and blinked, the room coming into focus. “How can you be in here with me?”

“It became clear pretty fast that—whatever this is—was solely affecting people with genetic modifications. I don’t have any.”

I glared at him. “And neither do I.”

“I always told you that.”

I scoffed. “Very sure you didn’t. Not clearly at least.”

“I couldn’t. It would have gone against the experimentation protocol set up by President Kersch.”

So Kersch had known.

I sighed and slumped forward, setting my elbows on my knees and clenching my fists. My muscles were sore. My skin hot, then cold. “What the hell is it, Feliu? What did Ahriman do to me?”

Feliu set one needle down on a tray next to me and picked up another. “He’s dead, by the way.”

“Good. I don’t give a fuck. I care what the fuck this is.”

“We don’t know. But I’m guessing it’s a virus.”

I stilled. “A virus?”

“What is it, Mig?”

That was Simion’s voice. I whipped my head around. He couldn’t be here. Couldn’t be in this room since he was genetmod. And I was his kill switch.

Feliu pulled the second needle from my arm and pointed to the camera in the corner. “If you’re hearing voices it’s probably President Simion. We attached your comm strap so you can communicate with him and anyone else who can’t be in the room with you. Give me one more minute and I’ll leave you two to talk.”

“Let me know when you wake him up,” I said to Feliu.

“Okay.” The doctor finished packing up his supplies and cleaning up and exited the room, sealing me inside.

I stared up at the camera. “Anyone else on this channel?”

“Just me,” Simion answered in my ear. “Exley’s on his way down though.
